While on location on a small airfield in Mojave California shooting Phase Two (2009), I took some downtime to record this unique sounding truck. These series of recordings were done before I had my own equipment unfortunately. This was tracked onto a Edirol R-4 Pro at 24/48k, using a Sanken CS-1.

I had a wonderful sound mixer opportunity on a project in the Dominican Republic in the early Fall of 2009 with a well established producer/editor Marc Marriott. We first shot in the city of Puerta Plata on the northern coast of the island and the accommodations given to us were just amazing. We had such a busy schedule of shooting throughout the day I didn’t get time to record much native sounds as I would have liked, but I made an attempt one late night at 3am to find some quiet areas around the resort to get something unique. Above is just some basic ocean sounds of the calm shore, soothing none the less.

Above is a small area just in between where the resort was and the beach, you’ll notice some of the AC unit noises in the background and some of the distant beach. The bug ambiences were fairly interesting throughout the entire island. Recordings were tracked to the SD 702T 24/96k, with the Oktava MK-012 MS rig.

I was the production sound mixer for a horror teen-slasher film titled One By One which was shot out at California City Studios in the Mojave Desert. We spent about 3 weeks shooting in the late night during some rather cold desert weather, around 25 degrees on average. This set was a real operational carnival which the Merry-Go-Round was claimed to be previously owned by Michael Jackson at his Neverland Ranch (seen in the bottom picture in the bottom right corner). After we wrapped on our last day of shooting, I was able to spend a few hours going around the carnival gathering some really great pneumatic, motor, and mechanical sounds from all the various rides. My favorite was from the Ferris Wheel, standing just under the rotating wheel with the carts passing by me just inches away. Recordings were tracked to my SD 702T at 24/192k, with my Oktava MK-012 MS rig. Other than the perfect recording conditions being in the middle of the desert, the only obstacle was the generator in the background you might pick up on the quieter sections.
If you look closely, you’ll see one of the stunt men on top of the ferris wheel prep’ing for a shot.

Decided to go try out the new gear and the new MS set up using a matched pair of Oktava MK-012 (the real russian type). There’s a bit of street noise being that the park sits in between a fairly busy street and major freeway. Recordings were recorded on a Sound Devices 702T at 24 bit 192k, and decoded MS stereo in post.

Finding a good place to record the ambience of the upper Amazon area was more difficult than I expected. The terrain was so thick and steep getting off of the road was tough. This recording was done with a spaced pair of Countryman B3’s, spaced about 8 ft. apart along side the infamous “Death’s Road”. Sound was captured via wireless with my Lectro UM400/UCR411’s, recorded at 24/192k to the 702T. I didn’t have my MS rig with me to save space in my luggage for the extended trip, the wireless B3 didn’t turn out half bad though.
